Climate Change Video Conference Series

  • CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT IN THE NETHERLANDS: THE DELTA COMMISSION (FILM + discussion) (CC series)
    Moderator: Mechthild (Mechi) von Knobelsdorff
Date: Sunday 29 March, 6pm GMT

The Netherlands will be one of the European countries that will be hit most by climate change impacts. If the country does not adapt to rising sea levels, the probability of large parts of the country being flooded increases significantly. This is even more relevant as the main economic centers are situated in vulnerable zones. Therefore, the Delta Commission evaluated the impacts and necessary adaptation. The outcome is the Delta report and an adaptation project of 100 mrd E.

During this video-talk, we watched the film together and then discussed it.

Mechi is a Graduate Student from Cambridge University. She is currently based in Brussels.

  • CO-BENEFITS OF SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT IN CHINESE CITIES (CC series)
    Presenter: Felix Creutzig
Date: Saturday 14 March, 6pm GMT
Place: Click here that day to join [1]!

Transport is responsible for an increasing part of our Greenhouse Gas emissions. In China, increasing GDP leads to exponential growing demand in motorization. Felix Creutzig investigates the welfare effects car transportation has on climate change and daily life of the urban population in China, including respiratory problems and congestion. The benefits of a suggested city toll are highlighted.

Felix Creutzig is Postdoctoral Fellow at the Berkeley Institute of the Environment[2]

  • POTENTIALS AND POLITICS OF WIND POWER (Climate Change Series)
    Presenter: Stefan Gsänger
Date: Sunday 8 March, 6pm GMT

Wind energy has seen huge growth rates over the past years, with the installed capacity doubling in average every third year. Stefan Gsänger explains the current situation of wind energy in the global energy supply system, future prospects and the need to shift towards a 100 % renewable energy future. He describes the characteristics of wind energy, including favourable policies as well as underlying politics which have major impact on the rapid and accelerated deployment of wind energy on a global level.

Stefan Gsänger is Secretary General of the World Wind Energy Association WWEA[3]

  • CLIMATE JUSTICE AND AN INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE AGREEMENT (Climate Change Series)

  • CLIMATE ETHICS AND NATIONAL INVESTMENT IN LOW-CARBON TECHNOLOGIES (Climate Change Series)
    Presenter: Stephen Stretton[4]
    Date: 15 February, 4PM GMT

The economic crisis has significant impacts on climate change mitigation. whereas consumption decreases, investments in low-carbon technologies do as well. Steve investigates the impacts and their solutions, calling for the creation of a National Investment Bank. The second part deals with Climate Ethics.

  • FASCNINATION IRAN: ABOUT POETRY, HEADSCARFS AND PERSEPOLIS
Presenter: Marc Kaufmann and Mechthild von Knobelsdorff
    Date: 14 February, 4PM GMT

Iran is a country full of terrorists where women don't have any rights and are barely seen in the streets. This is what the media makes believe us. Marc and Mechi went to see the country with their own eyes and tell a different story. It is a story about openness, about hospitality and poetry as a central part of life. Join on this journey of pictures in a different world - one that is less different from ours than we might believe... For climate reasons, Marc and Mechi travelled to Iran over land. Once in the country, they stayed for two months, did a language course and then travelled around.

  • POLICY RELEVANT CLIMATE SCIENCE
    Presenter: Cathy
    Date: 8 February, 6PM GMT

After reviewing the basic science behind global warming, particularly the role of feedbacks in the climate system, we will turn to the important science-policy issues that confront policy-makers. These include: what level of warming is considered dangerous? what does this tell us about emissions targets? how should global targets be turned into national targets? We will review recent results from studies of tipping points and feedbacks with long timescales which suggest that the target stabilization level for CO2 in the atmosphere is lower than scientists assumed a few years ago.
