New Communication System
From CommonFuture
Post into global channels, read from global channels
The idea is that you can post from Twitter, Wiki, Facebook or Email and it all reaches everywhere. A system of RSS feeds is carrying your message through. It looks a bit weird but please bear with me.
[1st Example]: If you send an email to the new list, the email list also sends an RSS-feed to the Wiki and to Twitter (Account: CF_OpenLetters). So you can directly read the email or do so through one of these two external systems. [2nd Example]: If you write something on Twitter (Account: CommonFuture) this is shared with followers not only on Twitter but also on several external social networks. [3rd Example]: If you write something on Facebook, this is shared on the wiki. [4th Example]: When ZeroCarbon (as an organization in our open network) writes on policy (topic-restricted) this is published in the Twitter (CommonFuture) and thereby on the Facebook page that they share with us. [5th Example]: Any edits of the wiki are not transferred anywhere else. It is important that we keep updtating the Twitter (CommonFuture) manually to let anyone know about our progress on the Wiki.
This has the following implications:
Messages publicly visible, New need for conciseness
- All messages are publicly visible on those nodes marked in red. So an email sent to an email list is not "private". This will hopefully help in making us a more accountable, democratic and open network.
- The first 20 words of each message are the most important. These are what is actually transmitted together with a link to the rest of your message.
Example: I send reply to Niklas' email which carried the title "JournalWeekend on Climate Change in November: Who participates?". In my reply I change the default email title "RE: Journal...." to "Cambridge participates in JournalWeekend...". In my message I can add all details but most importantly my message got across already in the email title. Similarly it is the first 20 words of a Facebook message on our page that really matter.
How to access each channel
Channels that update you and from which you can reply
- FACEBOOK: We have a "page" now which is the larger version of a "group" to allow the RSS. Click here to become a member. Messages are displayed on the page and pass over the stream. Some time after joining you will be made "administrator" of this group, so when you have an idea about changing anything, you are invited to do so.
- EMAIL: The email list is common-future@lists.common-future.org. To subscribe go to http://lists.common-future.org/listinfo/common-future
- TWITTER: To get general updates only, just follow "CommonFuture". To tweet yourself via this channel, message Janna. When she is available, she will then send you the password.
- EMAIL-BRIEF VIA TWITTER: To get summaries of emails (restricted to max ~1 per day) follow Twitter-account CF_OpenLetters.
Channels which just give you updates but without reply button
- STUDIVZ: Add this user to your friends and you will be updated on your "Buschfunk". Even better: Obtain password from Dirk and connect your friends.
- ONECLIMATE: Join this group.
- KAIOO: Join this group.
- If you like to be administrator for any of these groups, please message Dirk
Intermediate channels
- If you want to change something about the intermediate channels or disactive a channel, please message Dirk so that I can send you the passwords.
