UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP15)
From CommonFuture
The Copenhagen Conference – in which the successor treaty to the Kyoto Protocol will be negotiated – will be a defining moment for the future of our climate and ourselves. It could be the tipping point for climate policy. As such this conference will decide a great deal about our generation's future. However, the generation most concerned is not present in the policy-drafting. And demonstrations convey anger but do they really express what exactly we want in the final resolution?

Understanding the process
In order for CFTT to have an impact, it is necessary for us to understand how the negotiations process works. Therefore we are looking to understand the following questions:
- How do the negotiations work, ie who is involved, how, when and by whom are decisions taken, what has already been decided?
- What can be decided at Copenhagen, how can it be enforced or is this part of the negotiations?
- What are the sticking points in the negotiations where we might be able to have an influence?
The agenda for the upcoming UNFCCC conference in Bonn in March/April provides some idea of the key issues in the negotations. These include:
- Integrating land use & forestry issues into the protocol
- Emissions trading frameworks
- Targets for emissions reductions to be achieved by the developed nations
For the agenda, see Media:Provisional agenda_KP7.pdf
Schedule & Plan
February 15th - March 6th: Background research
In our last telephone conference - Feb 15th - we have decided that we will use the next three weeks to do background reading, to enhance our understanding of the COP15 process. We intend to summarise it into a primer on COP15 that will allow people to grasp the essentials quickly. If you want to contribute, here are two existing pages:
- Other groups involved and what they are doing
- Timeline: Timeline of conferences leading up to Copenhagen and which stakeholders are present at each
CFTT group attending conference in Bonn
Cheng Qian has said that there might be a possibility for a group of CFTT'ers to go and attend an upcoming UNFCCC conference in Bonn in from March 31 - April 8. So far, Qian, Mechi and Marc are potentially available to go there, but everyone is welcome, especially as it is not clear that these people can make it. Please let Qian know if you are interested (email cheng [at] germanwatch [dot] org).
